Apple’s Roger Pantos to Give Kickoff Session at Streaming Media West

I have a confession to make. Though I’ve attended dozens of Streaming Media conferences, I’ve never attended a kickoff session. Not, of course, because the content wasn’t information and insightful, but because I’m always scurrying about trying to finish my own presentations.

This dubious accomplishment ends at Streaming Media West next month, when Roger Pantos, the inventor of HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), presents a kickoff session entitled “Creating Advanced Media Experiences with HLS” on Wednesday, November 14 from 9:00 – 10:00 AM. Pantos’ is the sole name on the original HLS specification and I’ve watched his fabulous presentations from Apple’s World Wide Developer’s Conferences many times over (in Safari, of course). According to JUSTIA Patents, Panos has his name on 66 patents, an incredible achievement (please don’t tell MPEG LA; they might try to start a “Pantos pool”).

It’s not very often that you get to watch a pioneer present; it’s like learning HTML coding from Tim Berners-Lee or how to shoot a trey from Steph Curry. Hyperbole aside, by all accounts, HLS is the dominant ABR technology in use today, and it will be great to learn its finer points from the absolute master.
