While H.264 has proved remarkably durable and affordable, its share of device decoding workload is already declining, and most services will need to transition to advanced codecs like HEVC, AV1, VP9, and VVC to serve top‑end viewers with 4K/HDR while improving lower‑rung quality to retain mobile audiences.
However, codec decisions now carry significant royalty exposure. What used to be a primarily engineering choice now routinely involves legal, finance, and C‑suite review.
Modern codecs deliver real benefits, including HDR enablement, bandwidth savings, and quality improvements in lower rungs. They also introduce new costs. Though no longer practicing in either discipline, his numbers-based approach to codec benchmarking and economic analysis is grounded in his legal and accounting background; he holds both a law degree and a CPA.
