One of the most divisive technology issues in recent times has been Flash performance on the Mac. Apple fanatics claimed that Flash was buggy, unsecure and a CPU Hog, and Adobe acolytes claimed that performance suffered from Apple’s refusal to allow Adobe access to the GPU for H.264 decoding.
Well, now we get to know who’s right, as Apple has released a new API that Adobe will use to enable H.264 playback acceleration in a future release of the Flash Player. Read all about it in StreamingMedia Magazine by clicking here.
As the article states, I really don’t want to debate the technical merits of Flash in this case, and won’t respond to any comments that discuss those issues (my content management system won’t let me disable comments on an article by article basis, or I would for this one). The time for debate is over – Apple has given Adobe what they needed, and the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.
