Another Five-Star Review of Video Encoding by the Numbers

Any book author will tell you that while the revenue is nice, hearing from readers that find your book useful is even better. In this regard, I’m excited to blog about the following new five-star review of my book Encoding by the Numbers.

What I tried to do in Encoding by the Numbers was to tie all configuration decisions to metric scores to provide objective confirmation of their relative contribution. Want to know how much better VBR quality is than CBR? Whether 16 reference frames deliver meaningfully better quality than one reference frame? How VP9 compares to HEVC? It’s all there, backed by metric scores, not opinion.

Plus a primer on FFmpeg; since I had to learn to use FFmpeg to perform the testing necessary for the book, I figured I’d teach that as well. So, you not only learn the basics of FFmpeg but also the optimal configuration decisions to deploy with your FFmpeg command strings.

That’s the pitch, anyway. For more on Video Encoding by the Numbers, click here.
