Encoding in the Cloud or On Premise

I was once a skeptic on cloud encoding, but over the last 12 months have become a believer. In my Streaming Media article, The Cloud Vs. On-Premises Encoding Dilemma, I discuss why, discussing three classes of companies.

The first should go directly to the cloud. The second should go hybrid, encoding normal demand on-premise and overflow in the cloud. The third are media companies that used to encode on premise, but went exclusively cloud because it enabled some crtiical functions, like live advertising insertion or cloud editing. If you’ve been wondering what cloud encoding is, and whether it’s for you, check out the article.

For even more information on cloud encoding, I recently presented Choosing a Cloud Encoder at the Streaming Forum in London. Click here to download the handout and compare the quality of files produced by Amazon, Elemental, Encoding.com, QuickFire and Zencoder. The handout also has comparative performance benchmarks and quality-related conclusions.
