My New Book: Mastering Webcam and Smartphone Video

front_small.jpgJust a quick note about my new book, Mastering Webcam and Smartphone Video: How to Look & Sound Great in Webinars and Videoconferences ($24.95). Here’s the who, what, where, why, and when.

Who:  The book is targeted towards non-media professionals who produce webinars or frequently Skype or FaceTime with business associates.

What: The book provides media and technical training to help those using webcams and smartphones produce the best possible quality audio and video possible. First it covers audio and video fundamentals (lighting, clothing, framing, volume control, microphone selection and usage, volume control, etc.), then it details audio-related procedures for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. Then it provides specific details on how to optimize audio and video quality in FaceTime, Google Hangouts, GoToWebinar, On24 Webcast Elite, Onstream Webinars, TalkPoint Convey, and WebEx. The final chapter, Game Day, provides checklists to ensure the smoothest possible event.

Where: The book is available for sale on Amazon here, and is featured on a new website, www.thewebcambook.com.

Why: The idea for the book came to me after watching a webinar where two experienced presenters made a bunch of rookie errors. I realized that there were a lot of relatively simple concepts like rule of thirds, what to wear, the importance of lighting and external microphones, that many people just didn’t know. It’s not rocket science, but if you don’t know it, you don’t know it, and the quality of your presentation suffers, and becomes less effective.

When: The Webinar Edition, which includes chapters on the webinar platforms detailed above, is available now. Other editions are coming.
