For three years, encoding.com has issued an annual report about the video files that it produces for its 3,000+ customers. For me, it’s a reality check on which formats are doing well, and which are flailing. The most recent report, which you can download here, includes the following key insights.
- HEVC is losing share (from 6% to 3%), while H.264 continues to dominate at 79%. VP9 made an impressive debut at 11%.
- HLS dominates the ABR formats at 72% compared to DASH (21%) and Smooth Streaming (7%).
- 4K usage is up from 8% to 10%, wile 1080p jumped from 48% to 55%
You can read about these observations and more in my Streaming Media article entitled, HLS Still “Industry Standard,” Says Encoding.com Report.
