SLC Releases Free Course: Introduction to Streaming Media

Announcing a free course entitled Introduction to Streaming Media. As the name suggests, the course introduces students to fundamental concepts of streaming media. The course includes just under 100 minutes of instruction in 16 lessons with twelve quizzes to test retention. Students who complete all lessons and earn a 100 on all quizzes will earn a certificate.

The basic concept is that all employees in streaming companies, technical or otherwise, should know what a codec is, why H.264 is still king, what DRM is (and why we need it), what functions CDNs perform, what a video player is and does, and basic workflows for live and VOD production. This course provides a quick and easy way to learn all that and more.

The lessons are high-level and include:

  • What is Streaming (and How is it Different from Broadcast)?
  • Why Organizations Stream?
  • Codecs and Compression
  • Choosing and Deploying New Codecs
  • What is an Encoder and How Do They Work?
  • Introduction to H.264
  • Introduction to Adaptive Bitrate Technologies
  • Choosing an ABR Technology (HLS, DASH, and CMAF; Oh My!)
  • Introduction to DRM
  • Introduction to Low Latency Technologies
  • Introduction to Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE)
  • What is a Content Delivery Network (CDN) and When Do You Need One?
  • What are Video Players and How to Choose One
  • VOD Production Overview
  • Live Production Overview

Click the course emblem below to view the course materials and enroll in the course. Again, the course and certificate are free and will remain so.
