Encoding 2020: Experts Predict the Future of Video Encoding

Want to know what the encoding world is going to look like in five years? So did Streaming Media Magazine, so I spent the better part of July and August asking streaming media readers their thoughts on what the future would look like (via a survey), and connecting directly with vendors like JW Player, Akamai, Telestream, Limelight, Elemental, and Harmonic. The result is my article entitled, Encoding 2020: Experts Predict the Future of Video Encoding.

The article starts by sharing survey results like that shown in the table below. We asked which codecs our respondents would be using in 2020, whether they wouldn encode in the cloud or on-premise, what resolutions they would use, and what player they would use.

Then the discussion moved to the vendor side where we asked similar questions, but also questions about other important trends, like HDR, VR, and overall consolidation in the encoding market. With over 250 for LinkedIn shares, apparently a lot of people are finding it an interesting read. Click here to go to the article.
