June – 2010 – OK, it was just one department of the Navy – the Carderock Division in West Bethesda, Maryland. According to their web site, “Carderock Division is the principal Navy resource, national focal point and international leader in surface and undersea vehicle science, ship systems and related maritime technology. A major technical component of the Naval Sea Systems Command, the Division is a source of innovative technology for other national priorities such as environment, energy and transportation.” One of the first design facilities for the Navy, you can read about the Base’s heritage here.
During the two day consulting engagement, I (Jan Ozer) helped Carderock fine-tune the encoding settings used for intranet video, and discussed encoding for some highly innovative research projects that use streaming video in ship design. I also got to play with a Red One camera (well, touch it at least), which was a thrill.
The Carderock Base itself was a fun visit – it’s a huge facility that includes a 3200 foot building with three different test basins. They also perform a lot of testing in Chesapeake Bay – I almost got seasick watching the videos.
