I’m launching a new video course called Streaming Media 101: Technical Onboarding for Streaming Media Professionals. As the name suggests, the course teaches the technical background and skills necessary to successfully perform in a streaming-media related job, whether it’s producing and distributing video, or in a company creating the tools or services necessary to produce and distribute streaming media.
Streaming media is a complex technology and new employees in our space face a very steep learning curve. There are few, if any, college or similar programs to prepare them. This course, which contains over 60 lessons, 43 quizzes, and 14 exercises (totaling over 8 hours of video and growing) should help new employees become productive as quickly as possible.
Beyond the theory, the course contains fourteen hands-on exercises that reinforce key concepts, teach new skills, and show students how to use tools like MediaInfo, Bitrate Viewer, FFmpeg, HandBrake, Telestream Switch Pro, Zond 265, and the Moscow State University Video Quality Measurement Tool. Students encode files to VP9, HEVC, and H.264 and compare quality, encode a file to upload to YouTube, and then upload the file and embed the player in a webpage. Students learn to stream live to YouTube live via OBS.
Students buying tools demonstrated in the course can get discounts when purchasing these tools, like 10% off Switch Pro, 20% off Zond 265, and $150 off the Moscow State University Video Quality Measurement Tool.
Here’s a link to the course; here’s a video that describes the course.
Custom Training is Available
Most videos in this course that discuss encoding options show how to configure those options in a publicly available encoder, usually either the Adobe Media Encoder, HandBrake, or AWS Elemental MediaConvert. If you’re a large company who would like to customize the course for your own toolset, or design a custom training program, please contact me at [email protected].
