New Lessons on Streaming Monetization Added to Streaming Media 101

The Streaming Learning Center is pleased to announce the addition of four new lessons on video monetization to Streaming Media 101: Technical Onboarding for Streaming Media Professionals. These new lessons provide essential knowledge for all encoding professionals and cover crucial aspects of monetizing video content effectively.

Course creator Jan Ozer explained the additions. “Monetization drives the business. Encoding professionals must understand the revenue model their business is pursuing. As advertising models become more pervasive, it’s critical to understand the standards that enable video-related advertising. Knowing how to customize encoding for the business model is crucial for maximizing revenue and ensuring a seamless viewing experience.”

1. Introduction to Monetization: This lesson explores the importance of monetization and various strategies used to generate revenue from video content. It covers advertising and fee-based models, including subscription and pay-per-view, detailing different approaches like transactional VOD (TVOD), subscription VOD (SVOD), free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST), and virtual multichannel video programming distributors (vMVPDs). The lesson emphasizes optimizing encoding practices to align with the chosen monetization model for compatibility, affordability, and high-quality viewing experiences.

2. Ad Insertion Technique: This lesson details how content providers integrate ads into video streams to monetize their content while maintaining user experience. It explains the three main types of ad insertion: client-side, server-side, and dynamic ad insertion. The lesson describes each method’s unique approach, benefits, and implementation challenges to enable students to choose the optimal balance of revenue generation and viewer satisfaction.

3. Ad Insertion Standards and Protocols: This lesson covers key standards like VAST, VMAP, and VPAID, explaining their roles in ad serving and measurement. It details how VAST standardizes ad delivery to video players, VMAP manages ad scheduling, and the transition from VPAID to newer standards like OMID for ad measurement and SIMID for secure interactive capabilities. Understanding these standards is vital for effective ad delivery across various platforms and devices.

4. SCTE 35: This lesson focuses on SCTE 35, a crucial standard for signaling ad insertion and content replacement in video streams. It explains SCTE 35’s purpose, integration with streaming protocols like HLS and DASH, and its interaction with VMAP for ad management. The lesson also highlights the origins of SCTE 35 markers from SCTE 104 in broadcast scenarios and their direct insertion in streaming workflows, showcasing its adaptability to various ad delivery methods and its importance in ad-based monetization strategies.
